A joint masterpiece created by Hudson Soft (hardware architects) and NEC (manufacturing titan). In Japan, the miniature PC Engine was an absolute phenomenon, famously outselling the Sega Mega Drive and rivaling Nintendo’s Super Famicom.

In 1988, NEC released the CD-ROM² add-on, making the PC Engine an early video game console in history to play games on CD-ROM with orchestrated CD audio and animated anime cutscenes.

HuCard games are plug and play. CD-ROM games require `syscard3.pce` (Super CD-ROM² System Card v3.0) in the BIOS folder for Beetle PCE Fast / Mednafen. The emulator names above are starting points, not a promise that every title or accessory behaves identically. Computer platforms usually add model selection, disk handling and keyboard setup even when CPU emulation itself is mature.

Firmware

This system needs no firmware file. Install an emulator, open a game, and it runs.

How many files you need: none to go and find. No separate firmware file is needed for HuCard cartridges. (CD-ROM games require the System Card BIOS, covered on the PC Engine CD page).
