A 1989 enhanced PC Engine, rushed out to counter Sega's Mega Drive and then abandoned almost immediately when NEC's attention turned to the CD-ROM instead. Only seven games were ever made specifically for it.

The best of them, an arcade-perfect Ghouls'n Ghosts, is the one that justified the machine's brief existence.

Why it mattered

The SuperGrafx is a monument to a panicked half-measure — an upgrade rushed out and abandoned in months — and to how quickly the CD-ROM made raw cartridge power look beside the point.

The emulator names above are starting points, not a promise that every title or accessory behaves identically. Computer platforms usually add model selection, disk handling and keyboard setup even when CPU emulation itself is mature.

Firmware

This system needs no firmware file. Install an emulator, open a game, and it runs.

How many files you need: none to go and find. No separate firmware file is needed for SuperGrafx HuCard cartridges.

Firmware details checked 2026-08. Emulator requirements change — see Libretro — Beetle SuperGrafx documentation for the current list.

Where the software is

TOSEC catalogues computer disks and tapes broadly, including many revisions. It is useful for preservation, while a smaller curated selection is usually easier to play.

This site names preservation projects and explains what they are. It does not link to ROM downloads.

Where to start

  1. Ghouls'n Ghosts 1990 run and gun

The arcade port that best justified the machine's brief existence.

  2. Aldynes 1991 shoot 'em up
  3. 1941: Counter Attack 1991 shoot 'em up
  4. Battle Ace 1989 rail shooter

The verdict

Worth it for a superb Ghouls'n Ghosts; there are only seven games in total.

With so tiny a library it is a curiosity — most PC Engine value lies elsewhere.

Worth it if
Players curious about nec consoles and computers and willing to learn how the original machine worked.
Not for
Anyone who wants a large, instantly accessible library and no model, firmware or control decisions.

Scored 3/5 for fun today and 3/5 for historical importance. Those two scores decide the label at the top — a machine can matter enormously and still be no fun.
