SNK Neo Geo CD
The Neo Geo made affordable, at the price of long loading pauses.
Mixed Easy to run ▶ Watch on YouTube ↗
SNK's 1994 attempt to make the ruinously expensive Neo Geo affordable by moving its games onto CD — the same arcade hardware, a fraction of the price, and famously long loading pauses as the trade-off you accepted for it.
It carried the whole Neo Geo canon, from Metal Slug to the peerless Garou: Mark of the Wolves.

Why it mattered
The Neo Geo CD democratised SNK's arcade-perfect library, bringing games that had cost a fortune on cartridge within reach — at the cost of the loading times that came to define the machine.
Emulating it today
| Emulators | NeoCD (libretro), FBNeo |
|---|---|
| Setup effort | Easy to run (2 on this site's scale) |
| Controls | A standard modern controller covers the ordinary controls, though unusual accessories may need custom mapping. |
| Runs on a handheld | Yes |
The emulator names above are starting points, not a promise that every title or accessory behaves identically. Computer platforms usually add model selection, disk handling and keyboard setup even when CPU emulation itself is mature.
Neo Geo CD Boot BIOS (neocd.bin)
The Neo Geo CD requires a 512 KB BIOS ROM dump (neocd.bin / neocd_f.bin). The BIOS displays the spinning CD intro screen and handles CD loading into 7 MB of internal DRAM.
How many files you need: 1. A single 512 KB file: neocd.bin.
Where it stands legally: Copyrighted by SNK; dumped from a physical Neo Geo CD console.
Firmware details checked 2026-08. Emulator requirements change — see Libretro — FinalBurn Neo documentation for the current list.
Where the software is
Preservation catalogues describe verified dumps; they do not grant permission to download commercial software. A curated, correctly matched set is easier to use than an undifferentiated archive.
Copyright: Commercial software remains copyrighted unless its owner explicitly released or relicensed it. Homebrew, public-domain programs and current reissues should be treated separately from abandoned commercial titles.
This site names preservation projects and explains what they are. It does not link to ROM downloads.
Where to start
- Garou: Mark of the Wolves 1999 fighting
SNK's fighting engine at its peak, priced for people who could not afford the cartridge.
- Metal Slug 1996 run and gun
- The King of Fighters '98 1998 fighting
- Samurai Shodown II 1994 fighting
- The Last Blade 2 1998 fighting
The verdict
A cheap route into the classic Neo Geo catalogue, from Metal Slug to Garou; loading is the tax you pay.
The long load pauses grate, and the cartridge originals load instantly — emulate carts if you can.
- Worth it if
- Players curious about snk and bandai handhelds and willing to learn how the original machine worked.
- Not for
- Anyone who wants a large, instantly accessible library and no model, firmware or control decisions.
Scored 3/5 for fun today and 3/5 for historical importance. Those two scores decide the label at the top — a machine can matter enormously and still be no fun.
