Why it mattered
The DS ushered in a golden age for narrative adventure games and puzzle mysteries, providing an ideal canvas for Shu Takumi’s Ace Attorney and Ghost Trick.
Emulating it today
| Emulators | melonDS, DeSmuME |
|---|---|
| Setup effort | Trivial to run (1 on this site's scale) |
| Controls | The original interface uses a touch screen, so a modern touch device is the closest match. |
| Runs on a handheld | Yes |
Handled with high speed by melonDS and DeSmuME cores. Touchscreen maps cleanly to mouse, stylus, or right analog stick, with customizable dual-screen screen layouts. The emulator names above are starting points, not a promise that every title or accessory behaves identically. Computer platforms usually add model selection, disk handling and keyboard setup even when CPU emulation itself is mature.
Nintendo DS BIOS & Firmware (bios9.bin, bios7.bin, firmware.bin)
The Nintendo DS utilizes two CPU boot ROMs (ARM9 and ARM7) alongside a 256 KB or 512 KB firmware chip holding the user profile, calibration data, and system menu. While emulators like melonDS and DeSmuME include built-in high-level BIOS replacements for basic games, dumping the real BIOS and firmware files is required for full compatibility, DSi software, and authentic boot behavior.
How many files you need: 3. Three files: bios9.bin (ARM9 CPU BIOS, 4 KB), bios7.bin (ARM7 CPU BIOS, 4 KB), and firmware.bin (system configuration and menu, 256 KB).
Where it stands legally: Nintendo DS BIOS and firmware are copyrighted by Nintendo and must be dumped from a physical DS/DSi system using homebrew tools.
Firmware details checked 2026-08. Emulator requirements change — see Libretro — melonDS core documentation for the current list.
Where the software is
Preservation catalogues describe verified dumps; they do not grant permission to download commercial software. A curated, correctly matched set is easier to use than an undifferentiated archive.
Copyright: Commercial software remains copyrighted unless its owner explicitly released or relicensed it. Homebrew, public-domain programs and current reissues should be treated separately from abandoned commercial titles.
This site names preservation projects and explains what they are. It does not link to ROM downloads.

- Worth it if
- Players curious about nintendo handhelds and willing to learn how the original machine worked.
- Not for
- Anyone who wants a large, instantly accessible library and no model, firmware or control decisions.
Scored 5/5 for fun today and 5/5 for historical importance. Those two scores decide the label at the top — a machine can matter enormously and still be no fun.
