Nintendo Wii U
Excellent games stranded on a console shoppers mistook for an accessory.
Mixed Easy to run ▶ Watch on YouTube ↗
Nintendo's 2012 console, sold around a tablet controller that shoppers struggled to tell apart from a Wii accessory. It sold barely thirteen million and stranded a run of excellent games on hardware nobody owned.
Splatoon, the freshest idea Nintendo had had in years, debuted here before finding its audience on the Switch.

What it's worth now
Moderate $100–180 working, with GamePad
Rising with collectors precisely because it sold poorly: few units exist and many exclusives never left the platform. The eShop closed in March 2023, pushing value toward physical releases.
A guide to collectibility, not a valuation — real prices depend on condition, completeness and demand.
Why it mattered
The Wii U is Nintendo's most instructive failure — great games buried by a baffling name and a controller shoppers could not place — and the direct rough draft for the Switch that rescued its ideas.
Emulating it today
| Emulators | Cemu |
|---|---|
| Setup effort | Easy to run (3 on this site's scale) |
| Controls | A standard modern controller covers the ordinary controls, though unusual accessories may need custom mapping. |
| Runs on a handheld | Yes |
The emulator names above are starting points, not a promise that every title or accessory behaves identically. Computer platforms usually add model selection, disk handling and keyboard setup even when CPU emulation itself is mature.
Wii U Online Files & System Keys (otp.bin, seeprom.bin)
Cemu emulates the Wii U's Cafe OS using built-in high-level emulation (HLE) with zero external BIOS files required for standard offline gameplay. Connecting to Nintendo Network online services requires dumped console credentials (otp.bin and seeprom.bin).
How many files you need: none to go and find. Zero files needed for standard offline play. Two dumped key files for online Nintendo Network play.
Where it stands legally: Cemu is self-contained with open-source HLE OS implementations. Console-specific keys are only needed for online account authentication.
Firmware details checked 2026-08. Emulator requirements change — see Cemu Emulator Guide for the current list.
Where the software is
Preservation catalogues describe verified dumps; they do not grant permission to download commercial software. A curated, correctly matched set is easier to use than an undifferentiated archive.
Copyright: Commercial software remains copyrighted unless its owner explicitly released or relicensed it. Homebrew, public-domain programs and current reissues should be treated separately from abandoned commercial titles.
This site names preservation projects and explains what they are. It does not link to ROM downloads.

The verdict
Worth it for exclusives like Splatoon and Super Mario 3D World that were stranded on it.
Many of its best games were later remade for the Switch, often improved — check before diving in here.
- Worth it if
- Players curious about nintendo, modern and oddball and willing to learn how the original machine worked.
- Not for
- Anyone who wants a large, instantly accessible library and no model, firmware or control decisions.
Scored 3/5 for fun today and 3/5 for historical importance. Those two scores decide the label at the top — a machine can matter enormously and still be no fun.
