Rushed to market by Sega of America as a budget stopgap before the Sega Saturn, the 32X suffered from a tiny library of ~40 games. In emulation, however, its top titles run smoothly without hardware setup headaches.
Virtua Racing Deluxe on the 32X was a technical showcase, rendering flat-shaded 3D polygons at a smooth framerate with three vehicles (Formula 1, Stock Car, Prototype).
Under the hood
- CPU
- Dual Hitachi SH-2 (32-bit RISC) @ 23.0 MHz (Combined with Genesis 68000 and Z80 for 4 simultaneous CPUs!)
- Sound chip
- QSound PWM audio channels (10-bit stereo audio samples)
- Graphics
- 32,768 simultaneous colors (True 15-bit color palette overlaying Genesis video output)
- Media
- 32X ROM Cartridges & Sega CD 32X Discs

What it's worth now
Moderate $60–120 working
An ironic collectible whose failure makes it interesting — the spacer adapter and A/V cables must be present for it to work at all.
A guide to collectibility, not a valuation — real prices depend on condition, completeness and demand.

Emulating it today
| Emulators | Kega Fusion, PicoDrive |
|---|---|
| Setup effort | Trivial to run (0.5 on this site's scale) |
| Controls | A standard modern controller covers the ordinary controls, though unusual accessories may need custom mapping. |
| Runs on a handheld | Yes |
Handled smoothly by PicoDrive core. Optional BIOS files (`32X_G_BIOS.bin`, `32X_M_BIOS.bin`, `32X_S_BIOS.bin`). The emulator names above are starting points, not a promise that every title or accessory behaves identically. Computer platforms usually add model selection, disk handling and keyboard setup even when CPU emulation itself is mature.
32X SH-2 Boot ROMs (32X_G_BIOS.BIN, 32X_M_BIOS.BIN, 32X_S_BIOS.BIN)
The Sega 32X add-on contains dual Hitachi SH-2 32-bit RISC processors, each with its own internal boot ROM, plus a communication vector interface for the Genesis 68000. While fast mobile emulators like PicoDrive emulate the boot process in high-level code, cycle-accurate emulators require the three boot ROM dumps.
How many files you need: 3. Three files: 32X_G_BIOS.BIN (Genesis communication, 256 bytes), 32X_M_BIOS.BIN (Master SH-2, 2 KB), and 32X_S_BIOS.BIN (Slave SH-2, 1 KB).
Where it stands legally: 32X boot ROMs are copyrighted by Sega and must be dumped from original 32X hardware.
Firmware details checked 2026-08. Emulator requirements change — see Libretro — PicoDrive documentation for the current list.
Where the software is
Preservation catalogues describe verified dumps; they do not grant permission to download commercial software. A curated, correctly matched set is easier to use than an undifferentiated archive.
Copyright: Commercial software remains copyrighted unless its owner explicitly released or relicensed it. Homebrew, public-domain programs and current reissues should be treated separately from abandoned commercial titles.
This site names preservation projects and explains what they are. It does not link to ROM downloads.

The verdict
The mushroom-shaped 32-bit cartridge adapter for the Genesis. Short-lived commercial life, but features standout versions of Virtua Racing Deluxe, Knuckles' Chaotix, and Star Wars Arcade.
The strongest software can be rewarding, but original controls and setup assumptions may matter more than screenshots suggest.
- Worth it if
- Players curious about sega home consoles and willing to learn how the original machine worked.
- Not for
- Anyone who wants a large, instantly accessible library and no model, firmware or control decisions.
Scored 2/5 for fun today and 3/5 for historical importance. Those two scores decide the label at the top — a machine can matter enormously and still be no fun.
